As lawmakers negotiate the transportation bill they should keep in mind the invocation with which Representative Earl Blumenauer, their Democratic colleague from Oregon, often begins speeches: "Let’s have a moment of silence for all those Americans who are stuck in traffic on their way to the gym to ride the stationary bicycle."
It reminds me of a time I attended a Cupertino Planning Commission meeting in which members of the public spoke against a proposal to replace half of the shopping center on Stevens Creek Boulevard near Route 85 with housing. The housing would have supplanted some car parking near the fitness center there, which prompted the fitness center's manager to share his concerns. He noted that the only remaining parking would be somewhere at the other end of the shopping center (really not very far), and he exclaimed that his customers would refuse to park over there and walk all the way to the fitness center.
I'm certain he's absolutely correct in his estimation; (unco)incidentally, the commission subsequently rejected the proposal.
